The former Anfield hero for Newcastle United accepts a new managerial position.

Steve Watson, a former player for Newcastle United, has returned to management

after turning down a chance to lead struggling Darlington in the National League North.

After beginning his playing career with his boyhood club, the 49-year-old made

over 200 appearances for the Magpies. When he entered as a substitute in a November 1990 loss to Wolves, he became the youngest player to feature for United.

Under Kevin Keegan, Watson was a member of United’s adored

“Entertainers” squad. He is best remembered for scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0

Coca-Cola Cup away victory over Liverpool in November 1995, following an injury to Les

Ferdinand that required

the adaptable Geordie to play as an emergency striker.

Following his playing career, which saw him play for Sheffield

Wednesday, Aston Villa, Everton, and West Bromwich Albion,

Watson worked as a coach for Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, and Macclesfield

Town before taking the helm at Gateshead.

After leaving the International Stadium in January 2019 to join York City, the former England Under-21 international also managed Chester for a spell in the second half of the

2021–2022 campaign. Although Watson has recently worked at

Newcastle’s academy, he is going back to the dugout to manage a

Darlington team is eight points from safety in the Northern section of the non-league second division.

In an attempt to lead the Quakers to safety over the upcoming months,

Watson has already established his short-term goals after evaluating his new team during Saturday’s home loss to Scarborough Athletic.

He told the club website, “I just thought it looked like a team really

lacking in confidence and belief – and that’s something that is probably one

of the first things we have to try and turn around,” after deciding to lead until the end of the season.

In football, confidence and belief are correlated with performance,

so I’m hoping that our first victory and the way we try to play will give them

the confidence that they can succeed. It’s something we also need to address

as a club, Darlo, as there hasn’t been much consistency this year—not even back-to-back victories.

However, one step at a time. We’ll gather the team, and

since I believe it’s crucial, I’ll get inside their heads and discover what they’re thinking. To find out what an honest group of guys thinks about the situation.

“It’s been a very difficult week for the club, and we’re now proud to

announce Steve as our new manager,” Quakers CEO David Johnston continued.

Steve has experience working for teams in this league and has a solid resume.

He is aware of the goals of this league and what must be accomplished.

Watson’s first game in charge will take place on Saturday when Darlington travels to King’s Lynn Town.

The following Tuesday, the team will travel once more to play Southport.

On Saturday, January 13, Tamworth will make their Blackwell Meadows debut as the new Magpie team.
