Recent actions by Manchester United suggest that Jadon Sancho will remain with the team.
Perhaps the most unexpected development of this season, the story of Jadon Sancho
encapsulates Manchester United’s larger struggles under Erik ten Hag.
Sancho, who was expected to play a significant role for United this season,
has been excluded from the first team entirely following a fallout with the manager.
Now, it was anticipated that Sancho would be departing as the team entered the
January market with a large amount of dead wages on its books and outside the FFP boundaries.
It also made sense given his enormous salary and relative marketability based on his experience and age.
Nevertheless, United may have suggested that this is untrue.
The club just unveiled its 2024 calendar, which features a different player photo every month.
Strangely, Jadon Sancho is the first player to don the club’s January uniform.
It is undoubtedly an odd move on the part of the club to put Sancho up top for a squad
that boasts more than 20 players, many of whom are major players this season.
Generally, a player on the way out is not front and center for marketing campaigns,
especially fan-centric ones, as the commodity being sold instantly becomes
outdated as soon as the player leaves.
The examples of Mason Greenwood and Cristiano Ronaldo come to mind,
both of whom were taken away from roles that would make them the “face” of
the club after their exit was on the horizon.
Of course, with United continuously fumbling their handling of the club on and
off the pitch, it is still a possibility that Sancho will leave, leaving United fans with an
outdated calendar in the first month itself.
That would be extremely on point with how the club has been run by the
Glazers but the other end of the spectrum is certainly a stronger possibility now
than it was before this calendar was released.
