Brentford Turns Down Offers from Girona and Reims for Nigerian AFCON 2023 Standout; Fulham and Everton Also Interested
Brentford has turned down offers from Stade de Reims in Ligue 1 and the unexpected La Liga front-runners Girona for Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka, who has been a standout in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The rejection, reported by The Standard UK, comes despite late attempts by the French and Spanish clubs to secure Onyeka.
While Fulham and Everton have shown interest in the midfielder, Brentford is reluctant to engage in business with fellow Premier League competitors.
Girona, leading La Liga at the moment, is eager to strengthen their midfield options during the current transfer window. However, Onyeka would face competition from Aleix García, the preferred defensive midfielder for Girona this season.
Stade de Reims is eyeing Onyeka as a replacement for Azor Matusiwa, who they recently sold to Rennes.
Despite Onyeka’s limited starting opportunities at Brentford this season, having featured in only six
Premier League games, the Nigerian international has attracted attention with his
significant contributions to Nigeria’s progress to the quarterfinals in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.
