Transfer Deadline Day at Aston Villa: Anticipated Signings and Departures
After the letdown of Tuesday night’s loss to Newcastle, attention within Aston Villa has swiftly shifted to the remaining days of the January transfer window.
Football operations President Monchi has been working tirelessly to reinforce Unai Emery’s squad this month, but significant improvements were not expected.
So far, the only signing for Villa is Kosta Nedeljkovic, an 18-year-old right-back who will join Emery‘s team in the summer after being loaned back to Crvena Zvezda for the rest of the season.
Villa’s primary target this month was Morgan Rogers, a 21-year-old forward eager to join the club.
A deal was finally reached with Middlesbrough, with Villa paying a fixed £8 million and potentially an additional £7 million in add-ons based on meeting long-term clauses.
Rogers’ arrival will provide versatility to Emery’s attacking options, a crucial addition following the six-week absence of Jhon Duran.
The Colombian international may be sidelined until April, prompting Emery to rely on
Nicolo Zaniolo as a backup for Ollie Watkins instead of seeking a new forward for the 20-year-old.
Villa is expected to finalize two more deals, with goalkeeper Joe Gauci close to a £1.2 million
move from Adelaide United and Arsenal left-back Lino Sousa set to sign, subsequently joining
Plymouth on loan for the rest of the season.
Emery commented on the ongoing transfer activities, acknowledging the challenges of making
significant changes in January due to high demand for players in good form.
He emphasized the importance of a balanced approach, focusing on improving current players
while considering reinforcements for specific positions.
Furthermore, the possibility of loan exits remains, with Josh Feeney reportedly nearing a
loan move to Real Union for the remainder of the season.
