Eleventh-Hour Bid by Everton for Watford Player Unveiled; Dyche Grapples with a Sparse Squad in Relegation Battle
Everton reportedly attempted a late move to secure the signing of Watford’s Yaser Asprilla on deadline day, but the Hornets were dissatisfied with their offer.
Due to financial constraints, Everton’s director of football, Kevin Thelwell, focused on potential loan deals during the January window.
Despite their efforts, Everton did not sign any senior players, leaving manager Sean
Dyche with a notably thin squad as he works to steer the team clear of relegation.
Dyche’s priority was strengthening the team with a new winger or attacking midfielder, areas where Everton currently lacks depth.
Asprilla, who can play in both positions, has showcased impressive performances for Watford in
the Championship this season, making 27 league appearances, scoring four goals, and providing four assists.
While Everton sought cover for the sidelined Abdoulaye Doucoure, who has been crucial in the number 10 role, Asprilla’s potential acquisition did not materialize.
Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra revealed that both Everton and Sporting Lisbon made
last-minute attempts to sign Asprilla on deadline day, submitting offers to Watford.
The specific details of the bids were undisclosed, but Everton reportedly aimed for a loan with an obligation to buy.
However, neither club could meet Watford’s satisfaction, leading to an unsuccessful outcome.
Sierra suggests that Asprilla may attract more offers in the summer if he maintains his current impressive form. Everton’s inability to secure new signings has left them with limited options in
various positions, with a shortage of wingers and attacking midfielders.
The defensive situation is also a concern, with Everton one center-back injury away from a significant problem. Currently in 18th place in the table due to a controversial 10-point deduction,
Everton is just one point away from safety.
