After calls from Arsenal and Chelsea, Barcelona demands a significant discount from Everton for Amadou Onana.
The Spanish publication stated on their website (February 9) that Deco, the sporting director at Camp Nou, has expressed his intention to make an offer for the midfielder if feasible, with the possibility contingent on the player’s desire to join Barcelona.
Everton is reported to have set a €60 million [£51.2 million] asking price for the 22-year-old,
a figure that financially constrained La Liga giants would find challenging to meet and would likely require offloading multiple players to achieve.
Meanwhile, Arsenal and Chelsea have purportedly initiated contact regarding Onana,
albeit at a higher price tag.
However, Camp Nou’s aspirations regarding a transfer from Everton seem optimistic.
The chances of the Belgian midfielder departing for a fee just above the £33.5 million Everton
paid for him a season and a half ago appear slim, especially if Everton remains in the Premier League by summer.
If Everton’s fortunes decline over the next few months due to poor results, the club’s ownership
transition, and the appeal against points deduction, relegation could become a genuine concern once again.
In such a scenario, Onana’s departure from Everton might become inevitable, but Premier League clubs are likely to outbid Barcelona.
Assuming Everton maintains its top-flight status, Onana may not leave, considering
the numerous suitors over the past year and his current status as an Everton player.
Financial concerns across the league, partly influenced by Everton’s treatment, have reduced
spending significantly.
Therefore, if Everton were compelled to sell Onana, they might face a depressed market,
exacerbating the situation.
Whether Arsenal or Chelsea will be willing to make significant bids in the summer remains
uncertain, although their interest is evident. Barcelona, on the other hand, is hoping for a favorable deal.
However, the immediate focus should be on Onana’s role in Sean Dyche’s squad until May, as he will be crucial during this period.
