Everton’s young talent, Jack Barrett, has embarked on a loan move to Canadian club Cavalry FC for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. The Toffees announced the 21-year-old goalkeeper’s temporary departure through their Everton Academy Twitter account on Friday, February 9th.

Barrett, who has been part of Everton’s setup since he was nine years old, has made three appearances for the Premier League 2 side this season.

Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon expressed his thoughts on the acquisition, stating, “Jack embodies the qualities we seek in a goalkeeper. He excels in distributing the ball and orchestrating play, while also demonstrating quick reflexes in handling potential threats effectively.

CONCACAF Champions League participants

Barrett has been a fixture at Goodison Park for some time now, and it’s always uplifting to witness a graduate from the academy making strides toward the first team. Despite this, he has yet to secure a spot in the senior squad, and with his 22nd birthday approaching by season’s end, the window of opportunity appears to be closing.

The challenge for Barrett lies in the fact that Jordan Pickford holds the coveted number one position, with Joao Virginia and Andy Lonergan providing backup. Furthermore, Barrett doesn’t feature regularly for the Under-23s, making a move to gain playing time elsewhere a logical choice.

The unexpected aspect is his move to Cavalry FC, although the Alberta-based club does participate in the CONCACAF Champions League. The hope is that Barrett will receive ample playing time during his stint in Canada, allowing him to return as a more developed player come summer, with the possibility of extending the deal if beneficial for all parties involved.
