The most shocking Mason Holgate tackle I’ve seen in a long time occurred when Mitoma was almost done.
Jamie Redknapp has strongly criticized Everton loanee Mason Holgate’s red card during Sheffield United’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, labeling it as “one of the worst tackles I’ve seen in years.”
Holgate, 27, who joined Bramall Lane on loan from Goodison Park in January following an
unsuccessful spell with Southampton in the Championship, was sent off by referee Stuart Atwell for a
reckless challenge on Kaoru Mitoma just 13 minutes into the Premier League clash.
Initially shown a yellow card by Atwell, VAR intervened, prompting a closer review of the challenge on the pitch-side monitor, leading to Holgate’s dismissal.
During the half-time analysis on Sky Sports, with Sheffield United trailing 2-0 to Brighton, Redknapp condemned Holgate’s tackle as one of the worst he’s witnessed in the Premier League. He emphasized that Mitoma was fortunate to avoid serious injury from what he described as a potentially “career-ending” challenge.
Describing the incident, Redknapp stated, “It’s an assault. It’s one of the worst tackles I’ve seen in years. Even in my era, that would have been a scandalous tackle. How on earth Mitoma managed to get his left leg out of the way, I’ve got no idea. Thank goodness he has; otherwise, that’s career-ending. His career would be finished.”
Redknapp expressed sympathy for Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, noting the frustration of having carefully laid plans disrupted by such an incident.
