Keith Wyness advises Everton pursue “new legal action” in response to today’s revelation of a points deduction.
Keith Wyness, the former Everton chief, has suggested that the club might pursue further legal action if they are not satisfied with the outcome of their appeal regarding a points deduction.
Wyness, who served as CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 and now advises elite
clubs through a football consultancy, expressed concerns about the
Premier League’s handling of the situation, describing it as opening a “can of worms.”
Everton were penalized with a 10-point deduction in November 2023 for violating the
Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2021-22 season.
They have appealed this decision, with a verdict expected imminently.
Potential revisions to the punishment could involve reducing the points deduction,
imposing a financial penalty, or implementing a transfer ban.
Additionally, Everton faces another PSR breach in 2024, with the case anticipated
to be resolved before the season concludes.
If not for the 10-point deduction, Everton would currently hold a higher position
in the league table, sitting at 12th instead of their current 17th place.
Wyness emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the situation, suggesting
that the Premier League has opened a complex issue without a clear resolution strategy.
He highlighted the ongoing legal complexities and expressed that the matter is far from being resolved.
