Andy Gray defends Everton following a stalemate with Brighton, falling for a taunt from Richard Keys.
Andy Gray found himself defending Everton after their 1-1 draw with Brighton, in a conversation that started with Richard Keys questioning the validity of Everton’s style of play.
The debate arose following Everton‘s lead goal, scored by Jarrad Branthwaite in the
73rd minute, which came from a direct, long ball played by Jordan Pickford.
Keys questioned whether such a style of play should be accepted in football, to which Gray swiftly responded, emphasizing that there’s no right or wrong way to play the game. Keys clarified that he was being ironic and acknowledged that it was indeed a good goal.
Despite the direct nature of Everton’s goal, Gray and Keys both acknowledged the quality of Branthwaite’s finish, highlighting his skill as a center-back.
The goal appeared to be a significant moment for Everton, especially as they were
in a position to secure a win after Billy Gilmour’s sending off. However, their hopes were dashed when Lewis
Dunk scored an equalizer for Brighton in the 94th minute.
Gray emphasized that there’s no prescribed way to score a goal, commending
Branthwaite’s control and finish. He noted that while Everton has scored goals
through various methods this season,
they all contribute equally to the scoreline.
While Everton’s ability to score away from home is a positive sign, their failure to hold onto their lead was a disappointment.
