“YOU WERE WRONG.” IAN WRIGHT FEELING ANGRY ABOUT DELE ALLI, JADON SANCHO, AND JOE GOMEZ’S TALENT
Dele Alli, Jadon Sancho, and Joe Gomez have had varied career paths, representing top clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Manchester United, and Liverpool.
While Gomez continues to excel at Liverpool, winning the League Cup recently, Sancho is currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund from Manchester United, and Alli, once a fan favorite at
Tottenham, has struggled for playing time at Everton.
However, before these players made their moves to the big clubs, they caught the attention
of Chelsea as teenagers, according to former scout Chris Robinson.
Robinson revealed in an interview with Rising Ballers on Instagram that he had considered signing them for Chelsea but ultimately decided against it, a decision that drew criticism from Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
Robinson recalled his assessments of the players at the time, mentioning that he didn’t believe Alli was superior to existing Chelsea talents like Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Lewis Baker.
He also expressed reservations about Gomez’s footballing abilities while he was at
Charlton and considered Sancho to be just “okay” during his time at Watford.
Despite Robinson’s assessments, Alli, Gomez, and Sancho have gone on to have successful
careers, playing for big clubs and representing England. Wright disagreed with Robinson’s evaluations,
arguing that the players had indeed succeeded despite Robinson’s doubts.
The conversation highlights the ruthless nature of academy football, where tough
decisions are made based on potential and performance.
While some players thrive despite initial doubts, others may struggle to fulfill their potential, underscoring the challenges young talents face in the competitive world of professional football.
