New York City Manager Nick Cushing Reveals Aspirations for Everton Coaching Role Amid Manchester City Responsibilities

For New York City FC’s Nick Cushing, the dream of managing his childhood club Everton has long been a cherished aspiration.

After 19 years of dedicated coaching experience, this ambition no longer seems out

of reach for the 39-year-old from Chester.

Reflecting on his deep-rooted connection with Everton, Cushing admits, “Managing Everton isn’t just a fantasy, but given it’s Everton, perhaps it still feels like one.”

His lifelong affiliation with the club, from being a season ticket holder at a young age to attending significant matches with his family, underscores his passion for the club and his desire to contribute at the highest level.

Cushing’s journey to prominence in New York has been remarkable. Initially joining NYCFC as an assistant coach in 2020, he rose to prominence after successful stints with Manchester

City Women and their academy, where he nurtured talents like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer.

Elevated to the role of interim head coach after Ronny Deila’s departure in 2022, Cushing’s impressive leadership earned him the permanent position, solidifying his reputation as a top young coach in Major League Soccer.

Reflecting on his career path, Cushing acknowledges, “If I could choose, I’d be a football player every time, but coaching became my passion at 19, and I’ve amassed nearly 20 years of experience.”

Despite the surreal feeling of leading a team at Yankee Stadium in one of the world’s

greatest cities, Cushing remains focused and driven, balancing the demands of coaching with personal life.

Being part of the City Football Group has provided invaluable opportunities, albeit with its challenges.

Cushing acknowledges the pressure of upholding the group’s esteemed reputation, especially

with Manchester City’s success on the world stage and Girona’s competitive position in La Liga.

He embraces the responsibility, understanding the importance of maintaining standards within the footballing network.
