Following Everton’s £20 million rejection, Alan Shearer details Newcastle United’s club record bid for Man Utd forward.

Alan Shearer has reminisced about Newcastle United’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Wayne Rooney.

In 2004, Newcastle’s record-breaking £20 million bid for the forward was turned

down by Everton, prior to his move to Manchester United.

According to Shearer, Newcastle made another bid for Rooney after his transfer to Manchester United.

Rooney, who gained widespread attention after his stellar performance at Euro 2004,

where he scored four goals at just 18 years old, was highly sought after in the football world.

Throughout his career, Rooney became both Manchester United and England’s all-time leading scorer, leaving Newcastle and Shearer pondering what could have been.

Although Rooney was anticipated to surpass Shearer’s Premier League

goal record, he fell short by 52 goals, ending his career with 260 goals.

At the time when Rooney emerged as a talent, Shearer was nearing the end of his

career and was doubtful about the possibility of playing alongside him.

Shearer disclosed on the Rest is Football Podcast, “Yeah they did [submit a bid].

I don’t know how serious it was, the old chairman at the time Freddie Shepherd, his son was involved in the agency so whether it was to speed a new contract up, I don’t know.

But Newcastle did put a bid in for him when he was at Man United.

Definitely a bid went in for him. It would have been great but I don’t think realistically it was ever going to happen.”
