Beto signs with Everton, a team he’ll probably want to leave as soon as possible

Beto has become the 23rd player to miss a penalty out of the 31 who have taken them for Everton in the Premier League, placing them second only to Arsenal, who have missed 24 penalties.

However, who are Everton‘s penalty experts?

After a wait of over 10 months and 30 Premier League games without being awarded

a penalty, Everton finally received their first spot-kick of the 2023/24 season when Kurt Zouma of West

Ham United handled the ball in his own area.

The decision was made after a pitchside VAR monitor check, as the match officials

initially missed the incident.

Beto took the penalty, but his effort was saved by the West Ham goalkeeper, Alphonse Areola.

In total, Everton have scored 465 of the 664 penalties awarded to them

in senior matches (70%), with 199 being saved or missed, including 23 rebounds.

Conversely, their opponents have been awarded 531 penalties, of which 357

were converted (67%), with 174 saved or missed, including 16 rebounds.

In Everton’s early years, penalties took some getting used to. In the 1891/92 season,

Everton missed their first four penalties, before finally scoring their first successful one through Bob Kelso in February 1893.

In the Premier League era, Beto joins a select group of players who have failed

to convert the only penalty they took for Everton, including Stuart Barlow,

Don Hutchison, Nick Barmby, John Collins, and Kevin Mirallas.

On the other hand, Andros Townsend is one of four players

to have scored with the only penalty they took for Everton in the Premier League,

along with Andrew Johnson, Jo, and Nikica Jelavic.

Ayegbeni Yakubu scored his first Premier League penalty for Everton against

Newcastle United in May 2008, but subsequently had efforts saved against Portsmouth and Hull City.
