Wayne Rooney’s Loyalties Revealed in Response to Man Utd vs Everton Question
Wayne Rooney, who grew up as an Everton fan, had two stints with the club. Additionally, the former England international made 559 appearances during a successful tenure at Manchester United, filled with trophies.
Wayne Rooney opted not to choose a side when questioned about his support for either Manchester United or Everton in the upcoming Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
As a lifelong Everton fan, Rooney began his career at Goodison Park, making his senior debut at the age of 16 in August 2002. After spending two years in Everton’s first team, he transferred to Manchester United for £20 million plus add-ons, marking a record transfer fee for a teenager at that time.
Following his move to Manchester United, the former England forward solidified his status as a legend at the club, securing 12 major honors, including one Champions League title. Rooney amassed 559 appearances and scored 253 goals during his remarkable 13-year tenure at Old Trafford. After departing from Manchester United, he rejoined Everton, marking a return to his boyhood club.
Rooney’s much-anticipated return to Everton turned out to be short-lived, lasting just one season before he joined DC United for the 2018 MLS campaign. Upon retiring from professional football in January 2021, at the age of 38, Rooney transitioned into management, taking on the role of permanent manager at Derby County. His leadership proved instrumental in helping the team maintain their position in the Championship.
Following managerial stints at DC United and Birmingham, Rooney finds himself currently without permanent employment. Recently, he appeared as a pundit for United’s Premier League clash against Everton on Saturday. When questioned about his loyalties, given his ties to both clubs, Rooney opted to remain impartial.
In his statement to TNT Sports, Rooney expressed his deep affection for both Everton and Manchester United. Acknowledging Everton current challenges in the league and United’s aspirations, he emphasized his anticipation for an exciting match and wished success to the better-performing team on the day.
Rooney further commented, “Listen, I think Everton are in more need of the points and they’ll fancy their chances coming here today. United don’t seem like they’re in the best of form of late, especially coming off their last two games. It’ll be really important for them.”
Despite captaining United and guiding the team to success, Rooney’s leadership role evolved following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in May 2013. Former teammate Rio Ferdinand disclosed that Rooney initially displayed a reserved demeanor during his initial seasons at the club.
Ferdinand recalled, “He was sometimes quiet, but then sometimes he was a nuisance. A prank could come out at any minute – I remember one time I was walking in with the manager and him and Cristiano, one of them was under a table that had a dressing cloth over the top so you couldn’t see them underneath and one of them rolled a ball through the manager’s legs and he went mad!
“These lot, they were younger and they were a bit crazy but as he got older, he calmed down a bit and was one of the main heads in there.”
