Liverpool: Romano exposes Alonso’s U-turn and provides an update on TAA to Real Madrid

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool and Bayern Munich “are obsessed with” Xabi Alonso as they hunt for new managers.

Jurgen Klopp indicated earlier this year that he will stand down at the conclusion of the season to take a vacation from football. The Reds now need a new manager.

Alonso is expected to replace Klopp at Liverpool, but sources in Germany suggest he would instead join Bayern Munich if he departs Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Leverkusen remains unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season and leads second-placed Bayern Munich by ten points entering the final eight games of the season.

If Alonso is not available, Liverpool has backup options including Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon, Julian Nagelsmann of Germany, and Roberto de Zerbi from Brighton.

Earlier this season, Romano disclosed that Alonso decided to focus only on his role at Leverkusen, rather than investigating other job prospects.

In his piece “Caught Offside,” Romano stated that despite interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich, Xabi Alonso is currently focused on winning three trophies with Bayer Leverkusen. Earlier in the season, Alonso began to explore certain options, and there were inquiries about his contract status at Leverkusen, but for the time being, his main goal is to finish the season strong.

“In December, the situation changed dramatically, and Leverkusen realized they had a real chance of winning the Bundesliga, so Alonso is solely focused on that. They are now the favourites, and they will also look at the Europa League, after which we will see what happens with his future.

“I don’t believe it will be easy to hear anything definite in March or April. Also, Alonso is under contract with Leverkusen, and there is no specific provision for this summer, so clubs must go there and negotiate, and no one wants to distract them right now.

“I’m sure Liverpool and Bayern are obsessed with Alonso and want to present their initiatives to him, but it’s far too early to predict what he’ll do. I believe it will depend on when they win the Bundesliga and how they do in the Europa League.”

Romano: There is now interest in TAA from Real Madrid.

Trent Alexander-Arnold may leave Liverpool for Real Madrid after Klopp’s departure, according to reputable reports.

There is still the potential that he may stay at Anfield for many years, but Romano claims there are no conversations about a new contract, despite the fact that his current contract expires in the summer of 2025.

Romano said, “We know Trent Alexander-Arnold is an important player for Liverpool, but how likely is a new contract amid interest from Real Madrid? We’ll see – he and everyone at the club have a terrific relationship, and I’m sure Liverpool will do everything they can to keep him.

“There is still interest from Real Madrid, and they are following the situation, but there is no direct communication with the player at this time. They are closely monitoring the situation, but it is still early.

“Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool have not yet discussed a new contract directly. That is why Real Madrid is keeping an eye on the situation, knowing that no serious negotiations are taking place. It will then be vital to monitor what occurs with Michael Edwards under the new framework, as well as how these conversations progress.
