Suffolk, one of the largest and most innovative real estate and construction enterprises in the country, has ranked among the top 10 green contractors nationwide on Engineering News-Record ( ENR ) magazine’s 2024 list of the “Top 100 Green Building Contractors.” Suffolk moved up to eighth on this year’s list, with more than $3.36 billion in green design revenue from 2023, representing 61 percent of the company’s total revenue.

Winthrop Center is the fourth tallest building in Boston and the largest Passive House office building in the world. The award-winning project has permanently raised the bar on sustainable construction, and Suffolk was honored this past year with a Top New England Project Award from Engineering-News Record and a National Outstanding Achievement Award by the Construction Management Association of America. Companies on the ENR Top 100 Green Building Contractors list are ranked according to revenue for construction or design services generated during 2023 from projects registered with or certified by a third-party organization that sets standards for measuring a building’s environmental impact, energy efficiency or carbon footprint.

Suffolk’s in-house Sustainability team is led by Senior Director Steven Burke and Director Michael Swenson. The two well-respected industry leaders have created a fully integrated group that assists clients throughout the entire building lifecycle, including the design, preconstruction, construction and post construction phases of a project. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, data and artificial intelligence solutions, our project teams have delivered complex and sophisticated projects that incorporate green building methods and processes in a cost-effective manner.

“Moving up to eighth on the Top 100 Green Building Contractors is a significant accomplishment for Suffolk and our sustainability and project teams,” said Mr. Burke. “Green building remains a priority across all sectors, with an increasing diversity of programs and targets utilized by building owners. The time is right for forward-thinking clients to partner with a general contractor that embraces innovation to elevate industry expectations as we collectively move toward decarbonizing the built environment.”

Suffolk is committed to the holistic integration of sustainable practices within the built environment. To date, Suffolk has completed over 150 projects valued at more than $15 billion that are LEED-certified, the globally recognized standard for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. The company’s goal is to partner with its clients, trade partners and others to ensure sustainability is incorporated at every stage, from planning, design and material selection to building operation and energy efficiency after completion.
