Drake Maye, Patriots offense gets bad news
It looks like Drake Maye won’t have one of the Patriots best playmakers at his disposal.
On Friday, the Patriots ruled out starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. Stevenson suffered a lower-body injury at the tail end of last weekend’s loss against the Miami Dolphins. He missed every practice this week with what the team designated as a foot injury.
“Yeah, look, we’ll see what happens today and going forward,” Mayo said. “We feel confident about the backs, Gibby [Antonio Gibson], [JaMycal] Hasty, and we’ll figure out who we’re going to elevate after that. But, I feel good about it.”
Without Stevenson, the Patriots will be without their most productive offensive player in Maye’s first NFL start. This season, the veteran running back leads the Patriots with 356 rushing yards to go with three touchdowns. He’s averaging 4.6 yards per carry and also leads the Patriots in yards from scrimmage (393).
Stevenson had some issues with fumbles, losing the ball four times in the first four games. That’s why he started Sunday’s loss to Miami on the bench. Stevenson, however, led the Patriots with 89 rushing yards to go with a 33-yard touchdown run.
The Patriots will now turn their attention to their backup running backs. As he did last weekend, Gibson will likely start in Stevenson’s place. The veteran running back has had a solid season in New England, rushing for 207 yards while adding eight catches for 86 yards. Gibson leads the Patriots in yards per carry at 5.9.
