Razorbacks’ final attempt falls short

FAYETTEVILLE — Kiki Smith missed a three-pointer at the buzzer and Texas Tech held off the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team to win 75-72 on Sunday at Walton Arena.

The Razorbacks (6-6) were a Smith make shy of erasing a 70-60 deficit with 3:52 remaining. It was nearly the second time Arkansas wiped away a double-digit deficit; the Razorbacks overcame a 40-29 hole early in the third quarter to take a short-lived lead.

Texas Tech (10-2) built its lead back largely from the free-throw line, where it went 17 of 19 (89.5%) in the second half. The Lady Raiders led for 29:30, despite seven lead changes.

“I think it will be easy to find (plays) that could have been the difference,” Arkansas Coach Mike Neighbors said. “All losses hurt, but they feel different.”

Arkansas, which defeated Southeast Missouri State and Boston College last week, had a two-game winning streak snapped.

“I’m proud that we did fight back,” Neighbors said. “I’m proud we continue to do that. Our group is getting to the point where they really hate to lose. They take it very, very personally, and I think that’s a great sign.”

Texas Tech won for the first time at Arkansas. The Lady Raiders entered the game 0-12 when playing in Fayetteville, last losing 71-66 in the 2023 WNIT.
