Proposed Steelers signing shores up slot CB with former $22 million Super Bowl champ

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense will remain the team’s biggest strength in 2025, but that doesn’t mean general manager Omar Khan can stand pat on that side of the ball.

One area the Steelers need to address is cornerback. Donte Jackson is set to be a free agent and if he leaves, that will leave a void on the boundary opposite Joey Porter Jr.

Adding to that, the slot cornerback spot is a question mark after Beanie Bishop had an up-and-down showing in his rookie campaign and Cameron Sutton proved to be ineffective.

With all that in mind, Bleacher Report suggests the Steelers sign Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Avonte Maddox, who is projected for a one-year, $2.5 million deal by the outlet.

Maddox can return to play football in Pittsburgh, where his collegiate career took place while providing the Steelers with the veteran option if Beanie Bishop doesn’t show more consistency in Year 2,” Bleacher Report wrote.

Maddox, who was released from a three-year, $22.5 million deal last offseason before he was brought back a month later, is one of several free agents the Super Bowl champions will have to make a decision on. But, with the emergence of Super Bowl hero Cooper DeJean in the slot, chances are Maddox won’t be back.

The 28-year-old posted strong coverage numbers in limited opportunities in 2024. Maddox gave up a completion rate of 53.6% and a passer rating of 77.4 when targeted.
