Former Penn State Star Trace McSorley Joins Coaching Staff, Bringing Leadership and Experience
Former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley is returning to Happy Valley, but this time in a coaching role. The Nittany Lions legend, who led Penn State to a Big Ten Championship in 2016, has been hired as an offensive analyst and assistant quarterbacks coach for the 2025 season.
McSorley, one of the most successful quarterbacks in Penn State history, played for the Nittany Lions from 2014 to 2018. During his time under head coach James Franklin, he set numerous school records, including career passing yards, total touchdowns, and single-season passing yards. His leadership on and off the field made him a fan favorite and a key figure in Penn State’s resurgence as a national powerhouse.
After a successful college career, McSorley was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent several seasons in the NFL, with stints at the Ravens, Arizona Cardinals, New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Washington Commanders. While his professional career saw limited playing time, his experience in NFL systems has given him valuable insight into the quarterback position.
Now, McSorley returns to Penn State in a role where he can mentor and develop the next generation of quarterbacks, including current starter Drew Allar. His deep understanding of the program, coupled with his first-hand knowledge of the quarterback position, makes him a valuable addition to the coaching staff.
Penn State fans and alumni have enthusiastically welcomed McSorley’s return, with many seeing it as a full-circle moment. His passion for the game and connection to the university are expected to have a lasting impact on the team.
As the Nittany Lions gear up for the 2025 season, McSorley’s presence on the coaching staff is expected to bolster the offense and provide much-needed leadership. His transition from player to coach is a testament to his dedication to the game and his alma mater.
