Netflix has released a compelling new sports documentary titled The Turnaround, which captures a powerful story from the world of Major League Baseball, centered on the Philadelphia Phillies and their shortstop, Trea Turner. The documentary, which became available for streaming on October 18, 2024, is directed by Kyle Thrash and co-directed by Oscar winner Ben Proudfoot. Rather than just focusing on statistics or game footage, The Turnaround dives into an emotional and transformative journey that blends fan loyalty, mental health awareness, and the impact of community support.
At the heart of the documentary is Jon McCann, a passionate Phillies superfan best known online as “The Philly Captain.” McCann is credited with launching a grassroots movement that significantly influenced Turner’s 2023 season. After signing a massive 11-year, $300 million contract with the Phillies in 2022, Turner was under immense pressure to perform. However, his early performance in the 2023 season fell short of expectations. This slump drew criticism and boos from disappointed fans, putting even more strain on Turner.
Recognizing the weight of the negativity surrounding the player, McCann encouraged Phillies fans to show support instead of scorn. He urged them to give Turner a standing ovation during home games, hoping it would help lift his spirits and confidence. The idea quickly gained momentum. On August 4, 2023, in a remarkable show of unity, around 42,000 fans at Citizens Bank Park stood and cheered for Turner. This outpouring of support is portrayed in the film as a pivotal moment, not just for Turner but for the team and its supporters.
Following the ovation, Turner’s performance dramatically improved. Over the last 48 games of the season, he posted a .338 batting average and ranked among the top four players in the league in terms of on-base plus slugging percentage. His turnaround played a key role in the Phillies’ strong finish to the season, and it became a symbol of how encouragement and positivity can lead to real, tangible results in sports and beyond.
More than just a baseball story, The Turnaround touches on deeper themes of mental health and the emotional toll of public scrutiny. McCann, who has publicly shared his own mental health struggles, is portrayed not only as a superfan but also as an advocate for empathy and community. His actions underline the idea that emotional support from fans can do more than just boost morale—it can help reshape someone’s career and self-belief.
The documentary has been praised for its heartfelt storytelling and for highlighting a lesser-seen side of professional sports—the human side. Critics have called it one of the best sports documentaries of 2024, noting its emotional impact and the inspiring message it carries. The Turnaround stands as a testament to the power of kindness, the importance of mental health, and the unique bond between athletes and the communities that support them.
