After a fantastic 2023–2024 season, Aston Villa starts 2024 in the Premier League

Manchester City and Arsenal looming just below them—Unai Emery won’t be resting on his laurels.
In anticipation of a potential transfer, Aston Villa recently scouted a player in Serie A.
Aston Villa begins 2024 in second place in the Premier League standings
following an incredible 2023–2024 campaign.
Even with teams like Manchester City and Arsenal hovering just below them,
there is still work to be done to ensure a top-four finish, but Unai Emery isn’t going to be sitting back.
Transfer news for Aston Villa: Albert Gudmundsson
Albert Gudmundsson, a striker for Genoa, has reportedly been scouted by
Aston Villa multiple times this season as they prepare to make a move for
him, according to the Italian daily Tuttosport (via Football Italia).
The center-forward is being watched by Brentford and Crystal Palace, among other teams.
The report suggests that the Midlands team will keep scouting the player in preparation for a possible summer move.
Although Gudmundsson recently agreed to a contract extension through 2027,
a lot of teams will be vying to sign him at the end of the season if he keeps up his scoring in Serie A.
The stats for Albert Gudmundsson’s season
The 2023–24 season has seen the former AZ Alkmaar forward play brilliantly in front of
goal for Genoa.
The Icelandic international is scoring goals in the Italian top division seven times already t
his season, including victories over AS Roma and Juventus, and he doesn’t appear to be slowing down.
This season, writer Rajath Kumar has dubbed the 5 foot 9 gem “special.”
If he moved to Villa, he could form a strong partnership with Ollie Watkins.
This season, the Englishman has frequently played next to either
Jhon Duran or Moussa Diaby, but he would benefit from having a player like
Gudmundsson beside him. In fact, in his last ten games, Diaby has only found the net once.
Conversely, Watkins has scored 14 goals in 27 games this season and has been rejuvenated
over the last 12 months under Emery.
When compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues
throughout the previous season, Gudmundsson stood out in a few performance metrics,
and these figures may help him connect well with Watkins.
The 26-year-old could be the ideal counterbalance for the
Villa striker because he ranks in the top 4% for shot-creating actions per 90 (4.58),
the top 7% for progressive passes per 90 (3.58), and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.88).
Emery will need to add one or two players this month,
but he won’t be rushing to sign just any player—especially since it looks like he is
assembling a team that can contend for championships.
Even though a January transfer for Gudmundsson doesn’t
appear likely, he needs to keep an eye on the player because of how well he
has performed in Italy this year and he might end up being a valuable addition in the summer.
