Tony Mowbray returns as Head Coach at West Bromwich Albion after recovering from cancer

Tony Mowbray is appointed as West Bromwich Albion’s new Head Coach for a second spell after previously managing the club between 2006 and 2009.

The 61-year-old’s children were “scared to death” as he twice collapsed in the kitchen when battling cancer — but only days on from receiving the all-clear he will take charge of West Brom again.

Last year, Tony Mowbray collapsed on to his kitchen floor twice. He lost 4½ stone. He was too weak to stand up in the shower. He feared for his life. Yet somehow, this wise, worldly and universally-revered football addict remained determined to return to the dugout.

“It never crossed my mind not to come back,” Mowbray, 61, said. “I just had to get through it.”

Mowbray fulfilled that ambition last Friday. Eleven months after having bowel cancer diagnosed and only three days on from receiving the all-clear, he was appointed West Bromwich Albion head coach. Ever the football romantic, Mowbray is returning to a club where he has been adored since guiding them to the Premier League in 2008.
