Due to criticism from Jurgen Klopp, plans for a Premier League alteration that would affect Everton and Liverpool were delayed.
The introduction of blue cards and sin bins into the Premier League has encountered a setback following reported opposition from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
These new measures, aimed at reducing dissent and tactical fouls, were proposed by FIFA.
Under the proposed system, officials would be able to show a blue card to players guilty
of either offense, resulting in a ten-minute stay in a sin bin.
Initial reports suggested that details of these significant changes in on-field discipline would be announced on Friday.
However, no announcement was made amidst continued criticism from various figures within the footballing community.
Klopp, along with former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer and Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou, voiced disapproval of the potential new sanctions.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 3-1 victory against Burnley, Klopp expressed concern about the impact of blue cards, particularly in a highly charged game.
He remarked, “Imagine in this game and the referee has a blue card available?
It would have been the wild west.”
Klopp’s sentiment was echoed by others, contributing to the decision to delay the formal
announcement of the new measures.
FIFA released a statement confirming that further discussion on the matter would take place
at their annual general meeting next month, emphasizing the need for responsible testing
of such trials at lower levels before any implementation at higher levels.
