Brandon Aubrey taking aim at two NFL records on Sunday
In January 2023, the Dallas Cowboys faced a kicking crisis when Brett Maher struggled in a
wild card playoff game against Tampa Bay, missing four of five extra-point attempts.
Jerry Jones delivered a pre-game pep talk in San Francisco, but Maher’s performance remained subpar, leading to his departure.
Fast forward to January 2024, and Dallas is experiencing a turnaround in the kicking game.
Despite initial concerns during training camp, rookie Brandon Aubrey has been exceptionally reliable. Aubrey already holds an NFL record for the most successful kicks at the beginning of a career.
On November 5th, in a game against Philadelphia, Aubrey secured his 19th consecutive field goal,
breaking the previous record set by Travis Coons in 2015. Since then, he has added 16
more successful kicks to his impressive record, showcasing proficiency from various distances.
Aubrey’s achievements bring two significant records within reach.
Mike Vanderjagt’s 2003 record for most field goals in a season without a miss (37) and Harrison Butker’s 2017 rookie record of 38 field goals are now within Aubrey’s grasp with just three more successful kicks.
If he manages a fourth, Aubrey will secure three NFL records, providing a welcome resolution to Dallas’ historical kicking challenges.
However, one seemingly unattainable mark is David Akers’ record of 44 field goals in a single season.
Aubrey would need an extraordinary nine field goals in the upcoming game to match this feat, making it a highly unlikely accomplishment.
Notably, the Cowboys’ kicking records include Chris Boniol and Billy Cundiff,
who share the record for seven field goals in a single game. Aubrey currently leads the
Cowboys in field goals made in a single season and holds the record for consecutive successful kicks.
While he ranks 16th in all-time Cowboys kickers, a strong performance in the season finale
could see him surpass players like Roger Ruzek and Tim Seder, potentially making Aubrey the first Cowboys’ kicker to finish a season with a perfect field goal percentage, surpassing Dan Bailey’s 93.8% in 2015.
