Paul Robinson has criticized Sheffield United defender Mason Holgate following his sending off for a “really bad” challenge during their 5-0 loss to Brighton at Bramall Lane.

Initially, the challenge resulted in only a yellow card, but VAR intervened, revealing

its severity: late, at knee height, and endangering the opponent.

The reckless tackle, occurring just 12 minutes into the game, dashed any hopes

of success for his team at a critical juncture in the season.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Robinson remarked, “As you see it there in slow motion

and in the replay, it’s a really bad tackle. A penny for Chris Wilder’s thoughts stood down there now.

What must he be thinking?” He later added, “Chris Wilder has Mason Holgate to

thank for his stupid challenge to get himself sent off after 12 minutes.”

Holgate’s future at Everton remains uncertain.

A disappointing spell at Southampton preceded his move to Bramall Lane, and

after this incident, his standing there may also be jeopardized.

Such a tackle, especially with Sheffield United battling relegation, reflects poorly on the defender.

Should he return to Goodison Park, manager Sean Dyche is unlikely

to tolerate such behavior, potentially jeopardizing Holgate’s position at both clubs.

Errors like this one are intolerable, particularly in critical matches, costing Wilder’s team dearly.

While a return to Everton remains a possibility, it wouldn’t be surprising

if Dyche seeks to offload him permanently in the summer.
