Manchester United great Wayne Rooney laughably says that when he was barely 14 years old, the Everton U19 coach caught him with “a bag of cider and packet of cigarettes.”
Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has shared a humorous story from his youth, revealing that at the age of 14, he was caught by an Everton youth coach with cider and cigarettes.
Rooney recounted the incident during a conversation with Premier League
veterans Jamie Carragher, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and Lionesses star Jill Scott on the latest episode of The Overlap. Reflecting on his upbringing in Croxteth, Liverpool, Rooney recalled
crossing the road with a bag of cider and a pack of cigarettes, only to realize
that the car stopping for him was driven by Colin Harvey, then-manager of the Everton U19s.
Despite his youthful antics, Rooney’s career flourished, transitioning from Everton to
Manchester United at just 18 years old in 2004, where he achieved legendary
status before returning to Everton in 2017.
Subsequently, he ventured into Major League Soccer with DC United before
concluding his playing days with Derby County in January 2021.
In terms of his managerial career, however, Rooney has faced challenges, with
underwhelming stints at Derby, DC United, and Birmingham, averaging a low points-per-game ratio.
Following his dismissal from Birmingham in January, he has been without a managerial position.
