Tottenham and Newcastle’s interest in the £25 million Everton star might result in a transfer windfall for Man Utd.

Manchester United could potentially profit without lifting a finger amid reports of Premier League interest in Everton‘s midfielder James Garner.

A recent report from Football Insider revealed that both Tottenham Hotspur and

Newcastle United are eyeing Garner, who has been a pivotal figure in Everton’s midfield this season.

With 31 starts across all competitions, Garner ranks among the top players in terms of minutes played for the Toffees, with only James Tarkowski ahead of him.

Everton acquired Garner from Manchester United in the summer of 2022, a move

that initially raised eyebrows given Garner’s promising performances during Erik

ten Hag’s early tenure as manager.

The Merseyside club paid an initial fee of £9 million for the academy graduate,

with an additional £6.5 million potentially due in add-ons.

A crucial aspect of the deal was the inclusion of a sell-on clause.

Should Garner be sold this summer, Manchester United stands to gain a share of the profits.

While the specifics of the clause remain undisclosed,

such arrangements typically entitle the selling club to a percentage of

any profit generated from a future transfer.

Past agreements have reportedly seen sell-on clauses as high as 40%.

The latest reports suggest that Everton could demand up to £25 million

for Garner’s services this summer, aiming to capitalize on the player’s

development over the past two seasons.

Even if Everton has paid the full £15.5 million to Manchester

United, a portion of the potential £10 million profit would still be owed to the Red Devils.

Garner’s transfer represents one of many instances where Manchester United has

offloaded young talents with sell-on clauses attached. In January, Hannibal Mejbri

and Alvaro Fernandez moved to

Sevilla and Benfica respectively, with options for permanent transfers in the summer

and sell-on clauses included.

Similarly, Mateo Mejia’s permanent move to Sevilla last month and the potential

sales of Zidane Iqbal and Ethan Laird, who were loaned out last summer, could further

boost Manchester United’s coffers.

While these incoming funds may not be game-changing, they offer a welcome

financial boost, particularly amidst stringent profitability and sustainability regulations.
