Manchester United reportedly considering a transfer for Ryan Sessegnon from Tottenham Hotspur, following unsuccessful pursuits by both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United secured a deal with Tottenham in August, bringing in Sergio Reguilon on loan as short-term cover for the injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. Reguilon has returned to Tottenham, potentially leaving a gap at left-back for United. Recent discussions between the two clubs have sparked rumors of Ryan Sessegnon making a move to Old Trafford.
Miguel Delaney of The Independent reported that United’s talks with Tottenham have opened up the possibility of signing Sessegnon in the January transfer window. The 23-year-old, who made his first appearance of the season for Tottenham in the FA Cup against Burnley, could be on United’s radar as they seek to reinforce their left-back position.
United’s interest in Sessegnon dates back several years, with Jose Mourinho reportedly wanting to bring him to Old Trafford in 2017. Although the move didn’t materialize, United revisited the prospect in 2019 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Despite ending up at Tottenham, there’s now speculation that Erik ten Hag could succeed in securing Sessegnon’s move to Old Trafford.
Sessegnon, once considered a wonderkid, has yet to fulfill his potential during his time at Tottenham. His versatility has led to challenges in finding a consistent role, especially with Son Heung-min’s presence. United, considering the uncertainty around Malacia’s return, may view Sessegnon as an opportunity to rejuvenate his career and provide depth in the left-back position. While the idea of swapping one Spurs left-back for another may seem unusual, United seems to be exploring the possibility of signing Sessegnon, more than six years after their initial interest in him.
