After Beto scores and misses a penalty kick for Everton, West Ham scores two goals in stoppage time to win
Everton’s striker, Beto, experienced a mixed afternoon, scoring a redemptive goal in the 56th minute after missing the team’s first penalty of the season.
However, his joy was short-lived as Kurt Zouma equalized six minutes later.
Tomas Soucek’s brilliant outside-of-the-foot strike in the first minute of injury time,
followed by Edson Alvarez’s breakaway goal, sealed Everton’s fate in a 3-1 defeat in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The loss extended Everton’s winless streak to 10 matches, adding to a challenging week that
began with news of the Toffees’ 10-point deduction being reduced to six, moving them away from the relegation zone.
Despite Everton manager Sean Dyche’s decision to drop striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin,
who had gone 20 games without a goal, Beto’s missed opportunities and a saved penalty turned the decision into a questionable gamble.
Beto, who joined Everton from Udinese in the summer, has had an underwhelming
start to his career with the team. Despite scoring on debut against Doncaster in the
English League Cup, this marked only his sixth Premier League start.
While he has scored more recently than Calvert-Lewin, with one goal in 21 previous appearances, it has been a disappointing return.
Responding to some disquiet about his decision to take the penalty,
Beto redeemed himself by heading home James Garner’s hanging cross for the opening goal.
Dwight McNeil missed a chance to double Everton’s lead, and the game
shifted in favor of West Ham as Zouma nodded in James Ward-Prowse’s corner.
Soucek capitalized on the open game, finishing Mohammed Kudus’ cross, and Alvarez sealed the victory with a late counterattack.
This win marked only West Ham’s second victory in eight away games, propelling them into seventh place in the league standings.
