“FC Twente Offers Contract Extension to Left-Back Gijs Smal Amidst Rangers and Celtic Interest
Dutch club FC Twente has presented left-back Gijs Smal with a new contract,
addressing the speculations surrounding his potential move to Scottish giants
Rangers and Celtic in the January transfer window. With Smal’s existing
contract set to expire in six months, both Old Firm clubs have been linked with the 26-year-old defender.
Reports from the Netherlands, particularly from Dutch paper Tubantia
covering FC Twente’s winter training camp in Spain, reveal that Technical Director
Arnold Bruggink has initiated discussions with Gijs Smal regarding a contract extension.
While Twente striker Ricky van Wolfswinkel, also nearing the end of his
contract, reportedly has not been offered a renewal, the club has communicated to him that a January departure is not permitted.
Referred to affectionately as “Smaldini” by Twente fans, Gijs Smal is yet to confirm
his decision on the contract offer. The possibility of a January transfer
remains open if he chooses not to sign. Both Rangers and Celtic are reportedly in search of a left-back and a striker this transfer window.
While Rangers secured the signing of Fabio Silva from Wolves, the situation with Gijs Smal remains uncertain.
While FC Twente expresses the desire to retain Smal, the outcome of the contract
negotiations may influence the left-back’s future in the current transfer window.
The situation is expected to reach a resolution in the coming weeks, with Twente facing a decision on Gijs Smal’s potential departure if a new contract agreement is not reached this month.
