An perfect new partner for Botman, Newcastle is “leading the race” for a £69 million defender being pursued by Arsenal and Chelsea.

Newcastle United is said to be in the forefront of the competition to sign Ousmane Diomande, the Sporting Lisbon center-back, who is also drawing interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, and Real Madrid.

At 20 years old, Diomande is regarded as one of the most promising young defenders in

Europe, attracting attention from top clubs.

Eddie Howe has identified the need for a new center-back as a priority in Newcastle’s

2024 transfer plans, especially given Sven Botman’s unavailability for 17 games

this season due to a knee injury. Jamal Lascelles filled in, revealing a deficiency in quality defensive cover for the Magpies.

Diomande could potentially become Botman’s long-term defensive partner,

but securing the Sporting star won’t be straightforward. Reports indicate

a £69 million release clause in his contract, valid until 2027, making it necessary for

Newcastle to make a significant financial commitment.

Despite the challenges, Newcastle is currently leading in the race to acquire

Diomande, although a deal is more likely to happen next summer rather than in the current transfer window.
