NFL Teams Eye Dallas Cowboys’ Will McClay for GM Role: Washington Commanders and Carolina Panthers Seek Permission for Interviews
Frisco – Will McClay, a longstanding and highly trusted figure in Jerry
Jones’ inner circle, is once again a sought-after candidate by other NFL teams looking to lure him away from the Dallas Cowboys.
In the latest round of hiring efforts, the Washington Commanders and the Carolina Panthers have formally requested permission to interview McClay for their General Manager vacancies.
Serving as the Cowboys’ VP of Player Personnel since 2014, McClay holds
significant authority and commands great respect within the organization, often operating at a level that some would describe as “de facto GM.”
While Jerry Jones officially holds the title of General Manager, and his son
Stephen Jones stands alongside him, McClay, known as “The Unifier” for his ability to
align various factions within the organization, is considered almost “family”
due to his close ties with the Joneses.
In addition to his influential role, McClay is already compensated at a level comparable to a General Manager.
If he considers these offers, it may not primarily be about financial incentives but rather the desire to lead his own operation.
Historically, McClay has turned down similar offers in the past.
However, Jones is prepared for these requests, anticipating interest not only in McClay but also in defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and other staff members.
Addressing the situation, Jones acknowledged receiving several formal
requests and expressed a pragmatic view, stating, “We’ve received several (letters of request) already.
We’ve got a handful, and we might wind up with 15 or 20. We can’t be discouraged by that. It’s what happens when you have success. It’s part of it.”
