“Dallas Cowboys Weigh Potential Quarterback Shuffle Amid Cap Challenges: Cooper Rush Faces Release as Trey Lance Emerges as Backup Contender”

The Dallas Cowboys are contemplating a quarterback move in the upcoming

offseason due to salary cap constraints, facing a deficit of $11 million.

Quarterback Cooper Rush has been suggested as a potential cap casualty,

with a cap hit of $2.9 million for the 2024 season. Releasing Rush could save the

Cowboys $2.3 million, and the dead cap hit would be $625K. As both Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb are approaching the final year of their contracts, the team is striving to create more cap space.

Despite the financial considerations, Rush has been a valuable backup for the

Cowboys since joining as an undrafted free agent in 2017. In the 2022 season,

he played a pivotal role by starting five games when Dak Prescott was injured,

boasting a 4-1 record and contributing to the team’s playoff appearance.

Rush’s efficient performance prompted the Cowboys to sign him to a two-year, $6 million deal last offseason.

However, the acquisition of Trey Lance, a former No. 3 overall pick,

in a preseason trade with the San Francisco 49ers adds a new dimension.

While Lance is not perceived as a threat to Prescott’s starting position,

his presence may impact Rush’s role as a longtime backup.

The trade for Lance, coupled with the anticipation that he could contribute

in the future, raises questions about Rush’s continued role.

With one year left on his deal at $5.3 million, Lance provides a cost-effective alternative.

The Cowboys, managing impending contract extensions for Prescott and Lamb,

may consider promoting Lance as the primary backup quarterback,

potentially saving millions by parting ways with Rush.

The move hinges on the organization’s belief in Lance’s development as a

capable long-term backup and the strategic handling of the quarterback situation.
