Chief of Football Analytics at 777 Partners, closely monitoring Everton, set to leave

Mladen Sormaz is set to depart from his role as the director of football analytics at 777 Partners Football Group to assume the position of sporting director at Barnsley.

Although the acquisition of Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1% stake by 777 Partners was announced on September 15, the transaction’s completion in the fourth quarter of 2023 is still pending regulatory approval.

League One club Barnsley is expected to officially unveil the appointment today.

The move is viewed as a significant career advancement for Sormaz, who originally hails from Yorkshire, having relocated from the former Yugoslavia as a five-year-old during the ethnic conflicts in the early 1990s.

Sormaz’s professional journey began as the first-team data analyst at Huddersfield Town during the 2018/19 season. Subsequently, he served as the head of football analytics at Leicester City for three years before joining 777 in June 2022.

Despite the pending Everton ownership transition, Sormaz attended the team’s goalless draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage alongside 777 Partners’ co-founder and managing partner, Josh Wander, and Don Dransfield, the chief executive of 777 Football Group.

Sormaz, dedicated to observing matches across 777’s global portfolio of clubs, made several visits to Merseyside this season, attending games at Goodison Park, including the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace last month.

Additionally, he was present for the 2-0 victory against Chelsea in December, sitting next to England manager Gareth Southgate.

Sormaz was also interviewed by the ECHO at Everton’s Finch Farm training complex in November.
